Translated under the titleGESAMP - Reports and Studies, 71. Protecting the Oceans from Land-based Activities
UNEP, 2001Environmental processes are complex in nature. Interactions occur both within the biosphere and the abiotic environment and between them. Consequently, environmental problems are inextricably linked to, or influenced by, one another and do not recognise political boundaries. This is particularly the case for the problems of the marine environment. They cannot be remedied without taking into account the ecological interdependence of the oceans, the coastal areas and the freshwater systems associated with them...English

UNEP, 2009The South Asian countries (Afghanistan; Bangladesh; Bhutan; India; Iran; Maldives; Nepal; Pakistan; Sri Lanka) are home to about one-fourth of the world's population, but only contain about 4.5 per cent (1,945 billion m3) of the world's annual renewable water resources (43,659 billion m3). Except for Bhutan and Nepal, the per capita water availability in the region is less than the world average, with water use in this region being limited mainly to the agriculture sector. Almost 95 per cent of the withdrawn water is consumed by the agriculture sector, a much larger proportion than the average ...EnglishPermalinkUN Water

![]()
One of the main reasons cited for inadequate representation of biodiversity in the development processes is a lack of readily available information on inland water taxa. In response to this need for basic for information on species, the IUCN Species Programme conducted a regional assessment of the status and distribution of 2,261 taxa of freshwater fishes, molluscs, odonates, crabs and selected families of aquatic plants from throughout central Africa. This study is based on the collation and analysis of existing information, and the knowledge of regional experts.EnglishPermalinkThe status and distribution of freshwater biodiversity in northern Africa
![]()
This assessment is the first overview of the conservation status of 877 northern African freshwater species belonging to five taxonomic groups—fish, molluscs, dragonflies and damselflies, freshwater crabs and aquatic plants—in accordance with the IUCN regional Red List guidelines. Species at risk of regional extinction are mapped and conservation measures are proposed to reduce the probability of future declines.EnglishPermalinkGroupe d'experts sur le projet 5: effets écologiques des activités humaines sur la valeur et les ressources des lacs, marais, cours d'eau, deltas, estuaires et zones côtières
