Weather and water in cities
By the turn of the millennium, about half the world's population will be urban dwellers. So, cities will occupy an increasingly important place in human affairs. Profound questions arise regarding climate, weather and water, that all affect cities directly and are at the same time affected by them. This booklet, a contribution to World Meteorological Day 1997, discusses the role of the World Meteorological Organization in sustainable urban development.

Meteorology in the service of aviation
The theme selected for World Meteorological Day 1989 was a tribute to the development of aeronautical meteorology in response to the ever-growing demands of aviation. Mr J. Kastelein, President of the WMO Commission for Aeronautical Meteorology, describes the role played by meteorology in the past in an effort to improve the safety and efficiency of air navigation. He also describes the intensity with which available air space is used today.

Meteorology and the media
Published to mark World Meteorological Day 1988, this booklet contains four chapters. Chapter 1 provides a historical background and review of the service products disseminated to the public through the media, Chapter 2 deals with the various modes of disseminating weather reports and Chapter 3 summarizes the replies from some fifty Member countries to an inquiry on the relationship between national Meteorological and Hydrological Services, the media and the general public. Chapter 4 contains an interview with Dr K. Takeuchi of the Japan Weather Association.
