Climate change and water resources in the tropical Andes
Climate change will without a doubt affect future access to clean drinking water, as well as to water for sanitation, irrigation and agriculture, mining operations, and hydro power production in the tropical Andes. Social, economic and environmental conflicts surrounding the struggle for control over water will be exacerbated in areas where water scarcity is juxtaposed with rapidly growing water demand due to population pressure and expanding economic activities. This paper describes the challenges surrounding current and future water use in the tropical Andes by first reviewing the modern and ...

This paper describes the challenges surrounding current and future water use in the tropical Andes by first reviewing the modern and future projected hydrological cycle and anticipated impacts on environmental services provided by glaciers and wetland vegetation. The paper elaborates on the current tensions and conflicts surrounding water use from a social and economic perspective and ends by focusing on the challenges ahead and looking at possible solutions for more sustainable and equitable future water use in the region.

The decade of Latin America and the Caribbean, a real opportunity
This book takes a unique look at the current economic and social development trends in Latin America and the Caribbean and the region’s challenges for the future, including those of climate change and 'natural' disaster mitigation. It calls on cities to integrate the management of the possible impacts of climate change as well as the obvious disaster risks into urban planning, and to prepare action plans focused on adaptation methods that include an analysis of the added dangers faced by the urban population, adequate land-use planning, effective water resource management, risk management, the ...

It calls on cities to integrate the management of the possible impacts of climate change as well as the obvious disaster risks into urban planning, and to prepare action plans focused on adaptation methods that include an analysis of the added dangers faced by the urban population, adequate land-use planning, effective water resource management, risk management, the application of appropriate construction codes, and the identification of financial mechanisms and methods of risk transfer in order to increase their resilience to these looming hazards.
The overall book highlights the region’s strengths and its social gains and institutional reforms. It also notes that the region still has a long way to go. Despite the present positive outlook, it states, the region faces risks that future events could still see a downturn if public policies are inadequate, if lessons of the past are not considered, and if the obstacles that stand in the way of rapidly achieving equity are not recognized.Language(s): English

The Climate and Development Challenge for Latin America and the Caribbean: Options for Climate Resilient Low Carbon Development: executive summary
IDB, 2012Climate change will have broad impacts on human activities and ecosystems during this century. The likely consequences are of such magnitude that the simultaneous need to adapt to the new climate conditions and reduce the carbon footprint to prevent further damage will likely become one of the main driving forces for the global community. Specifically, a rise of 2C over pre-industrial levels is now seen as unavoidable with significant negative effects in economic activities, social conditions and on ecosystems.

Specifically, a rise of 2C over pre-industrial levels is now seen as unavoidable with significant negative effects in economic activities, social conditions and on ecosystems.
This study, a joint IDB-ECLAC-WWF effort, addresses key topics related to the climate challenge for Latin America and the Caribbean: 1) key physical impacts consequence of climate change that most affect the region, likely cost to the regional economies derived from these impacts, and key adaptation measures to respond; and, 2) how and at what cost would the region be able to reduce its contribution to the global carbon footprint at a level consistent with climate stabilization goals. During this event, key findings of the analysis will be released followed by a general overview of the study. The full document will be launched during the Rio+20 Conference on June 20th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.Language(s): English; Other Languages: Spanish
