There will be a particular focus on the flow of information from researchers to policy makers and the way in which the decision-making process in climate adaptation and risk reduction is commonly managed. The study will confine itself to Europe and will look into practical cases of European regional and national adaptation strategies. It will also investigate specific projects and initiatives addressing Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

At the crossroads : climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction in Asia and the Pacific
UN/ISDR, 2011This report was prepared to provide a snapshot of how disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) are undertaken and integrated, if at all, in the Asia Pacific region. It does so by taking stock of past and ongoing regional initiatives and by looking into the role of certain organizations in the implementation process. It also discusses key developments in three areas—political, policy and institutional—which are instrumental in facilitating the integration of DRR and CCA agendas in the region. Concluding remarks and next steps to push the integration forward are presente ...

The report hopes to contribute to improved regional planning and programming for DRR and CCA, and highlights areas for cooperation among regional and sub-regional organizations. It also aims to support both national and regional stakeholders in DRR and CCA, such as governments, UN agencies, intergovernmental organizations, research and technical organizations, non-government organizations, and especially the ISDR Asia Partnership on Disaster Reduction (IAP) members, in order to enhance regional planning, programming, and cooperation.Language(s): English

Framework for action - For the Implementation of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR)
UN/ISDR, 2001In many parts of the world, disasters caused by natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, drought, wildfires, tropical cyclones and associated storm surges, tsunami and volcanic eruptions have exacted a heavy toll in terms of the loss of human lives and the destruction of economic and social infrastructure, not to mention their negative impact on already fragile ecosystems. Indeed, the period between 1960 and 2000, witnessed an significant increase in the occurrence, severity and intensity of disasters, especially during the 1990s. Local Government Self-Assessment Tool
18 April 2012: As part of its Making Cities Resilient Campaign, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has launched the Local Government Self Assessment Tool, to support cities in managing disaster risk. UNISDR reports that 2011 was the worst year on record for economic losses from disasters.
The tool aims to increase understanding of disaster risk reduction (DRR), allowing cities to establish baselines and identify planning and investment gaps for risk reduction and climate change adaptation. According to UNISDR, the new tool has been piloted in over 20 c ...
