WMO welcomed its new Secretary-General, Petteri Taalas, on 1 January. He came to the Organization following a tenure as Director of the Finnish Meteor¬ological Institute (FMI) from 2002 to 2015, which was interrupted from 2005 – 2007 when he served as Director of the WMO Development and Regional Activities Department. His career at FMI started in 1986, where he was, in turn, head of research, scientist, leader of ozone research and research professor of remote sensing, before taking on his role at the helm of the Institute. While in that role, he became known in the Finnish media as “Mr Climate Change.”
