Published by: PEMSEA ; 2011T he East Asian Seas are a major economic resource for the world’s demand for fishery and aquaculture products, and a natural heritage and biodiversity asset for the people of the region. The East Asian Seas harbour a significant share of the world’s coral reefs and mangroves; it also produces about 40 percent of the world’s fishcatch and more than 80 percent of aquaculture. But, with over 2 billion people living in the region, the human pressure on marine and coastal resources is very high, intensified by the impacts of climate change and severe weather events.
