WMP Report Series, 40. Register on National Weather Modification Projects 2001-2002
As part of the activities which WMO carries out in its Programme on the Physics and Chemistry of Clouds and Weather Modification Research, a Register of National Weather Modification Projects is kept. The Register has existed since 1975 when the Seventh World Meteorological Congress agreed that an inventory of activities within Member countries related to weather modification should be initiated and maintained. Periodic reviews have all recommended that the Register be continued. The Register is providing information also of interest to number of UN programmes outside WMO. This present Registe ...

Agricultural Meteorology Programme (AgMP), 90. Agrometeorological Aspects of Organic Agriculture, Urban Agriculture, Indoor Agriculture and Precision Agriculture
There has been a steady change in the nature of food production over the last few years. In all regions of the world there has been a shift towards organic production methods by limited numbers of producers with a view to a more earth-friendly form of production. There has also been a world-wide development of urban agriculture, particularly in regions with rapidly increasing urban populations, and difficulty in deriving maximum benefit from rural resources to feed the urban population. Likewise, the increase in indoor production has been marked over the last decade. Indoor production allows g ...

Agricultural Meteorology Programme (AgMP), 91. Interactions Between Climate and Biological Diversity
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; Korsakova S.; Gringoryan V.; et al. - WMO, 2003 (WMO/TD-No. 1166)The potential impact of climate change on biological diversity is overshadowed by the overwhelming effect of human-induced modifications of terrestrial ecosystems that are responsible for major losses in biological diversity. Therefore, it is necessary to discriminate between the more immediate and more obvious effects of habitat modification by humans and the longer-term, more subtle effects of climate change. Despite varying opinion about the nature and extent of the impact of climate change on biological diversity, there is a general agreement that biological diversity will decline worldw ...

Agricultural Meteorology Programme (AgMP), 92. The Impacts of Agrometeorological Application for Sustainable Management of Farming, Forestry and Livestock
During the 12th Session of CAgM held in Accra, Ghana, February 1999, a Working Group on “The impacts of agrometeorological applications for sustainable management of farming systems, forestry and livestock” was established. The group was in turn composed of six rapporteurs from different countries. Three members left due to different reasons and one new member (USA) was introduced. The WG Chairman prepared a draft report with the individual submissions from each rapporteur and submitted it to all group members. A joint meeting of WG members in September 2000 (four WG members were present) in G ...

Report of the 2001 global survey on the participation of women and men in the activities of the World Meteorological Organization
The second global survey on the Participation of Women and Men in the Activities of WMO was carried out in 2001, by means of a questionnaire. The objective was to update the data collected during a similar survey done in 1997, and track progress in achieving full opportunity for women in the meteorological and hydrological professions. This document provides an evaluation of the responses of 105 Members participating in the survey. The information presented will be a topic of discussion at the second WMO Conference on Women in Meteorology and Hydrology being organized in March 2003. The key co ...

PWS, 07. Supplementary guidelines on performance assessment of public weather services
The purpose of this Technical Document which is intended as a supplement to WMO/TD No. 1023, is to provide further elaboration of the concepts portrayed in WMO/TD No. 1023 and to re-enforce understanding through the provision of practical examples and models employed by various NMSs. Issues pertaining to some of the limitations of performance assessments are also discussed. Additionally, issues that require further investigation are highlighted. One broad area where further assessment focus is desirable is that of delivery of services as opposed to production of services

PWS, 06. Guide on the application of new technology and research to public weather services
In order to provide guidance to support NMSs, especially smaller Services and those in developing countries, in their service delivery activities by keeping pace with developments in technology, a Technical Document (PWS-1, WMO/TD No. 1054) was prepared in 1999 under the auspices of the WMO Technical Commission for Basic Systems (CBS) by the Public Weather Services Expert Team on Product Development and Verification and Service Evaluation. The purpose of that Technical Document was to provide a framework for the requirements of public weather services for data and products. At its twelfth sess ...

JCOMM Technical Report, 05. Voluntary Observing Ships (VOS) Climate Subset Project (VOSCLIM): project document
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) - WMO, 2002 (3rd revised edition; WMO/TD-No. 1122)The primary objective of the project is to provide a high-quality subset of marine meteorological data, with extensive associated metadata, to be available in both real time and delayed mode. Eventually, it is expected that the project will transform into a long-term, operational programme. Specifically, the project gives priority to the following parameters: wind direction and speed, sea level pressure, sea surface temperature, air temperature and humidity.
