Weather, Climate and Health
A contribution to World Meteorological Day 1999, this draws attention to the linkages between climate, weather and health, and to the role of WMO and NMHSs in contributing to a safer and healthier world. It shows how humans are vulnerable to changes in meteorological conditions, such as extreme heat or sudden cold temperatures and harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, and to weather events such as tropical cyclones and severe floods, which create favourable conditions for the transmission of various diseases.

Comprehensive assessment of the freshwater resources of the world
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; United Nations (UN); United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); et al. - WMO, 1997Few would dispute that urban water systems should be both healthy and sustainable. Ideally, along with efficiency, these are central pillars in every urban water strategy. Unfortunately, the narrow pursuit of health can undermine the sustainability of water systems, and vice versa. Such trade-offs must not be rationalised away, but recognised in order to develop diversified and better aimed water strategies. It is crude policies, such as promoting health by providing free water for all, or promoting sustainability by charging everyone high prices, that create the steepest trade-offs. Trade-off ...

IPCC Special Report. The Regional Impacts of Climate Change: An Assessment of Vulnerability : summary for Policymakers
The Special Report explores the potential consequences of changes in climate for ten continental- or subcontinentalscale regions. Because of the uncertainties associated with
regional projections of climate change, the report necessarily takes the approach of assessing sensitivities and vulnerabilities of each region, rather than attempting to provide quantitative predictions of the impacts of climate change. As in the SAR, “vulnerability” is the extent to which climate change may damage or harm a system; it is a function of both sensitivity to climate and the ability to adapt to new co ...

Natural resources and rural development in arid lands : case studies from Sudan
United Nations, 1985In 1975 the Council of the United Nations University identified three priority areas for its concern-world hunger, human and social development, and the use and management of natural resources - and directed that a programme should be organized in each of these areas. Each of these programmes is closely related to the others. For example, better use and management of natural resources would help to solve the problem of world hunger and so release more resources and human energy for human and social development.
By early 1977 the Programme on the Use and Management of Natural Res ...
