Instability Indices and Heavy Rainfall Forecast in a Maritime Environment
Forecasting heavy rainfall associated with in-situ convective cloud development over small island states is a challenge in operational forecasting as not all numerical models are able to resolve convection at such small scales. Forecasting heavy rainfall associated with in-situ convective cloud development over small island states is a challenge in operational forecasting as not all numerical models are able to resolve convection at such small scales. Forecasting of such phenomena is mainly based on prevailing local conditions and the use of a plethora of thermodynamic indices derived from the local sounding. This study is an effort to assess the suitability of the different available indices, hereafter referred as traditional indices, to forecast heavy rainfall from local convection, commonly known as pure sea breeze, over Mauritius. An attempt is also made to improve the forecast through modifications of the traditional indices, to include lower boundary layer temperature and moisture parameters. Suitable thresholds of all these indices are also determined via scatter plots of the events which are categorised into weak, moderate and severe based on hourly rainfall intensity.

IAEA Annual Report 2011
IAEA, 2012"The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has released its annual report for 2011. The report highlights, inter alia, its research activities on climate change issues in the oceans, isotope applications in hydrology and climate studies, and nuclear energy as a mitigation option.

PEMSEA, 2011T he East Asian Seas are a major economic resource for the world’s demand for fishery and aquaculture products, and a natural heritage and biodiversity asset for the people of the region. The East Asian Seas harbour a significant share of the world’s coral reefs and mangroves; it also produces about 40 percent of the world’s fishcatch and more than 80 percent of aquaculture. But, with over 2 billion people living in the region, the human pressure on marine and coastal resources is very high, intensified by the impacts of climate change and severe weather events.

GAW Report, 202. Workshop on Modelling and Observing the Impacts of Dust Transport/Deposition on Marine Productivity
In this report we evaluate the state-of-art knowledge and uncertainties regarding the deposition of dust on the ocean and its mineralogical composition provided by models and measurement datasets. Global climate models were recently intercompared by Huneeus et al. (2011) using results from the AEROCOM model intercomparison. The deposition calculations from these global models are frequently used as input for biological productivity calculations.
