WHYCOS is a global concept, comprising a number of independent regional or basin-wide Hydrological Cycle Observing System (HYCOS) components. At the local level within a country, HYCOS brings together various agencies to work on delivering enhanced data and information products, such as the production and delivery of flood forecasts and warnings. Manual on estimation of Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP)
The manual describes procedure for estimating the maximum probable precipitation and the maximum probable flood. This is the third revised version.
The first and second editions of this manual were published in 1973 and 1986, respectively. The current edition keeps a majority of the content from the second edition. Newly added content in this third edition primarily results from experiences, since 1986, in directly estimating PMP for the requirements of a given project in a design watershed on probable maximum flood (PMF) in China, the United States of America, Australia and India.

Le présent document présente le cadre de mise en oeuvre du projet Volta-HYCOS, Système d’observation hydrologique du bassin de la Volta. Ce document a été élaboré sur la base du document de projet provisoire préparé en 2003 par l’Organisation Mondiale de la Météo (OMM) avec l’assistance technique de l’Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), selon la nouvelle stratégie adoptée par l’OMM de développement du projet AOC-HYCOS (Afrique de l’Ouest et Centrale) par grands bassins versants.

WHYCOS: World Hydrological Cycle Observing System
Forty per cent of the world's population today lives in countries which have medium-to-high water stress. Unless water resources are wisely managed, shortages could become a serious obstacle to economic and social progress. The World Hydrological Cycle Observing System (WHYCOS) has been developed to contribute to WMO's goal of assisting Member countries maintain and improve their observational and information systems to help them better manage their water resources. This booklet gives a short look at this programme.
