Workshop on Strategy for Implementation of Climate Services Information System (CSIS): final report

The World Climate Research Programme Accomplishment Report
This report highlights the progress made in international coordination by WCRP and in cooperation with its sister programmes in developing high-quality, climate-data records, especially from space-based observing systems, developing a comprehensive set of model simulations of centennial and decadal Ear th/cl imate system project ions, and coordinating major international reanalysis activities worldwide.

The multitude of international field experiments, analysis and re-analysis of observations, Earth system models, climate prediction and projection projects, and scientific synthesis and assessments need to be coordinated and integrated with other relevant information to enable practical application of fundamental climate science of direct relevance, benefit and value to society. User feedback is essential in driving the climate research towards addressing climate services requirements for adaptation planning, risk management and sustainable development. Providing tailored climate information in a timely and effective manner on global, regional, and national levels, and in response to the needs of different economic sectors such as agriculture and food production, water resources management, disaster risk management, and human health, energy and transport, among others, is key to the success of the Future Earth and GFCS initiatives. We describe in this paper the WCRP strategy and approach for addressing these challenges and opportunities.

The subseasonal to seasonal timescale provides a unique opportunity to capitalise on the expertise of the weather and climate research communities, and to bring them together to improve predictions on a timescale of particular relevance to the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS). A planning group which included representatives from WWRP/THORPEX, WCRP, CBS and CCl drafted the implementation plan, giving high priority to establishing collaboration and co-ordination between operational centres and the research community involved in subseasonal to seasonal prediction, and to sponsorship of key international research activities.
The main goal of the proposed WWRP/THORPEX-WCRP joint research project is to improve forecast skill and understanding on the subseasonal to seasonal timescale, and promote its uptake by operational centres and exploitation by the applications community. Specific attention will be paid to the risk of extreme weather, including tropical cyclones, droughts, floods, heat waves and the waxing and waning of monsoon precipitation. Work will be guided by a steering group that will work in conjunction with appropriate WMO bodies and other relevant structures.Language(s): English

The World Weather Records (WWR) database contains historical monthly climatic data from land surface stations worldwide. First released in 1927, the WWR database has been widely employed in operational climate monitoring, international climate assessments, and numerous other applications.
