ECMWF - Strategy 2006-2015
ECMWF, 2005The vision guiding this strategy is that European citizens will continue to receive the very best meteorological forecasting services at all ranges, particularly regarding severe weather. The superiority already achieved in global and local numerical weather prediction will be maintained and extended to other aspects of the environment. This will guarantee optimal return on the large investment made in observing systems, particularly in meteorological and environmental satellites. Benefits will accrue to all sectors of European economy and society and to the entire Earthobservation community. ...

This will guarantee optimal return on the large investment made in observing systems, particularly in meteorological and environmental satellites. Benefits will accrue to all sectors of European economy and society and to the entire Earthobservation community. Achieving this vision at an affordable cost will necessitate enhancing the already good cooperation between the observation providers, the prediction centres and the service providers, which together form the European Meteorological Infrastructure1. Within this infrastructure, ECMWF will play a leading and co-ordinating role for global Numerical Weather Prediction.

AGM, 06.

PWS, 07. Supplementary guidelines on performance assessment of public weather services
The purpose of this Technical Document which is intended as a supplement to WMO/TD No. 1023, is to provide further elaboration of the concepts portrayed in WMO/TD No. 1023 and to re-enforce understanding through the provision of practical examples and models employed by various NMSs. Issues pertaining to some of the limitations of performance assessments are also discussed. Additionally, issues that require further investigation are highlighted. One broad area where further assessment focus is desirable is that of delivery of services as opposed to production of services

PWS, 04. Guidelines on graphical presentation of public weather services products
A major downside to the rapid developments in communications technology, however, is in the area of graphics. On the one hand, developments in computer technology enable production of a vast array of graphic material, and on the other hand, lack of formal training to produce expertise in communication graphics has resulted in a scarcity of individuals with design capabilities. These guidelines attempt to bridge this gap. They are intended to provide information and assistance on how to develop graphics to suit the unique needs and circumstances of NMSs. They identify relevant graphic design pri ...

Guidelines on performance assessment of public weather services
The purpose of this Technical Document is to provide broader guidance on performance assessment of public weather services, with something of an emphasis on forecasts and warnings. An assessment programme can be seen in the context of a quality system, where it is important to ensure that the information gathered and processed is focussed on user requirements, to be used in making decisions and taking actions to improve performance, rather than just being gathered for the sake of it. In essence, the object of the exercise is to ensure a sustainable and cost-effective system delivering quality ...

On the front line: public weather services
Produced as one of WMO's contributions to the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, this 1995 World Meteorological Day brochure is a fitting tribute to those who provide public weather services in the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services of Member countries. It looks back at how weather and climate have influenced people's lives throughout the ages, and this fascination continues to this day. New challenges including the rapid growth in weather prediction technology and services are also analysed.
