ACQWA: A summary for policymakers
The project seeks to assess the vulnerability of water resources in mountain regions such as the European Alps, the Central Chilean Andes, and the mountains of Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan) where declining snow and ice are likely to strongly affect hydrological regimes in a warmer climate. Model results are then used to quantify the environmental, economic and social impacts of changing water resources in order to assess how robust current water governance strategies are and what adaptations may be needed in order to alleviate the most negative impacts of climate change on water resources and wate ...

Enhancing Resilience to Climate and Ecosystem Changes in Semi-Arid Africa : an integrated approach (CECAR-AFRICA)
As a part of global efforts to tackle impacts of climate and ecosystem changes, we urgently need to overcome vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems in developing countries, especially Africa. This research program aims for three objectives by focusing on the semi-arid region of northern Ghana where the change impacts have been severely felt in forms of unpredictable floods and droughts: (1) forecast and assessment of climate and ecosystem change impact on agricultural production; (2) risk assessment of extreme weather events and introduction of adaptive water resource management methods; and ...Permalink![]()
WMO data on UNdata
WMO data provide the basis for better understanding the climatology of severe weather and extreme events such as tropical cyclones, El Niño, floods, heat waves, cold waves, droughts and other natural hazards, contributing to saving both lives and property, and improving our understanding and monitoring of the climate system and environment. WMO has drawn attention to issues of major concern, such as ozone layer depletion, global warming, climate change and diminishing water resources.
WMO enhances the application of meteorological and hydrological information for the security and well-b ...Permalink![]()
Emergency Response Activities (ERA)
WMO's Emergency Response Activities (ERA) programme involves the application of specialized atmospheric dispersion-modelling techniques to track and predict the spread of airborne hazardous substances in the event of an environmental emergency. This kind of specialized application depends directly on the operational infrastructure of the numerical weather prediction systems that are implemented and maintained at many of the global, regional or national meteorological centres within WMO's World Weather Watch system.Permalink![]()
