The Management for Adaptation to Climate Change (MACC) project in Malawi is implemented by Total Land Care (TLC) with funding from the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Malawi and a 5 years time frame from 2008 to mid 2013. The key objectives of the project are to reduce deforestation, to improve household food security and incomes, and to develop rural-based enterprises. The Management for Adaptation to Climate Change (MACC) project in Malawi is implemented by Total Land Care (TLC) with funding from the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Malawi and a 5 years time frame from 2008 to mid 2013. The key objectives of the project are to reduce deforestation, to improve household food security and incomes, and to develop rural-based enterprises. The review team found the project in line with Malawian as well as Norwegian development policy. TLC also has an extensive and good cooperation with Malawian NGOs as well as with international organisations, both in Malawi and abroad. Still it seems that more could be done to avoid duplication of efforts. For activities in forestry and agriculture the prospects of sustainability are assessed as good and the risk of failure as low because project interventions are appreciated by the farmers, the lead farmer system secures that knowledge remains in the villages, the project emphasises training and community empowerment.

This publication reports on a community-based cost benefit analysis of a disaster risk reduction (DRR) and food security programme in a Malawian agricultural community. A field research was done in collaboration with the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), Synod of Livingstonia, a development organisation working in Malawi which is currently finishing a major DRR programme that is the focus of this study.Language(s): English

Because these events are recurrent in nature, effective, accurate and timely prediction and early warning of these events can enable Governments and other stakeholders to put into motion appropriate actions for mitigating or alleviating their adverse impacts. In this study, the relationship between seasonal rainfall and global Sea Surface Temperature anomalies was examined. The analysis was based primarily on empirical statistical modeling using observed rainfall data from 9 meteorological stations spread over the entire Malawi spanning 35 years i.e. 1970-2005. The missing data in some stations were estimated using correlation and regression methods while single mass curve technique was employed to check the homogeneity of the rainfall data for all stations. Other methods employed in the study include correlation analysis, standardization, regression analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and model verification technique.
