Pastoral pathways : climate change adaptation lessons from Ethiopia
A key aim of the Norwegian Development Fund is to increase the adaptive capacity of marginalised rural poor farmers and pastoralists in the South. The focus country of this project study, Ethiopia, has a legacy of variable and unpredictable rainfall, causing frequent droughts and heavy floods, undermining local as well as national food and water security. The analysis in this paper is based mainly on interview data collected in two sites in Afar as well as insights from past studies in the region as documented in published literature. Water adaptation in Africa
The continent of Africa is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change, mostly through the medium of water. The continent has always had unpredictable rainfall and climate patterns which will be made worse by future climate change, leading to serious impacts on continental social and economic development. Africa is highly dependent on rain-fed agriculture and fluctuations in rainfall can have significant impacts on food production and security. This briefing discusses the adaptation of Africa’s water resource management to climate change.
The briefing explains that the ...

The State of African Cities 2010: Governance, Inequalities and Urban Land Markets : governance, Inequalities and Urban Land
UN-Habitat, 2010The State of the African Cities 2010 goes above and beyond the first report, which provided a general overview of housing and urban management issues in Africa. With the subtitle: Governance, inequity and urban land markets, the report uncovers critical urban issues and challenges in African cities, using social and urban geography as the overall entry points. While examining poverty, slum incidence and governance, the report sheds more light on inequity in African cities, and in this respect follows the main theme of the global State of the World’s Cities 2010 report. Through a regional analy ...

Verification of the TIGGE and WRF Models in forecasting the precipitation event for 3rd February 2010 over Zambia
Nkonde Edson - NOAA, 2010In this case study, attempt was made to verify the performances of the TIGGE and WRF models in simulating rainfall over southern Africa for the period from 1st November 2009 to 10th February 2010, with 24 and 48 hrs lead time. We have tested the skills of the models in forecasting heavy rainfall event, in excess of 40mm per day. Special emphasis was given to rainfall event that occurred on the 3rd of February 2010 over Zambia. The associated atmospheric conditions prior and during the rainfall event were also analyzed, both in analysis and forecasted fields.

Energy security in Mozambique
Mozambique is endowed with considerable hydropower potential and is rich in modern energy resources. However, more than 80 per cent of the country’s population is not connected to the national grid because of inadequate infrastructure, a lack of investment, and the huge cost of installing an energy grid, among others. This study explores the energy-security dynamics affecting the country: energy availability, accessibility and efficiency for the electricity subsector.

The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2010 : addressing Food Insecurity in Protracted Crises
FAO, 2010The number of undernourished people in the world remains unacceptably high at close to one billion in 2010 despite an expected decline – the first in 15 years. This decline is largely attributable to a more favourable economic environment in 2010 – particularly in developing countries – and the fall in both international and domestic food prices since 2008.

Climate Change and Humanitarian Action: Key Emerging Trends and Challenges
OCHA, 2009During the past century global temperatures increased by approximately 0.7 degrees Celsius. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the pace of climate change is now such that even in a ‘best-case’ scenario, further increases of at least 1 degree are expected by 2050. According to the IPCC, current emissions are already nearing the limit required in 2015 to keep warming below 2 degrees Celsius; the level UNDP defines as a “a reasonable and prudent long term objective for avoiding dangerous climate change”. In the absence of swift action to radically reduce gre ...
