Energy security in Mozambique
Mozambique is endowed with considerable hydropower potential and is rich in modern energy resources. However, more than 80 per cent of the country’s population is not connected to the national grid because of inadequate infrastructure, a lack of investment, and the huge cost of installing an energy grid, among others. This study explores the energy-security dynamics affecting the country: energy availability, accessibility and efficiency for the electricity subsector.

The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2010 : addressing Food Insecurity in Protracted Crises
FAO, 2010The number of undernourished people in the world remains unacceptably high at close to one billion in 2010 despite an expected decline – the first in 15 years. This decline is largely attributable to a more favourable economic environment in 2010 – particularly in developing countries – and the fall in both international and domestic food prices since 2008.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the pace of climate change is now such that even in a ‘best-case’ scenario, further increases of at least 1 degree are expected by 2050. According to the IPCC, current emissions are already nearing the limit required in 2015 to keep warming below 2 degrees Celsius; the level UNDP defines as a “a reasonable and prudent long term objective for avoiding dangerous climate change”. human welfare (Foley et al. 2005). In many developing countries populations are heavily dependant on freshwater, forests croplands and fisheries (Homer-Dixon and Blitt 1998) to which we should add pastures. Shortages in these sectors can give rise to increased poverty, environmental refugees (Jacobson, 1988) and even conflict. Some authorities have even suggested a new age of insecurity (HomerDixon, 1991 ), the so-called “neo-Malthusian” theory. There is a growing body of literature on environmental scarcity and conflict (Raleigh and Urdal, 2005, Urdal, 2005) which reflects not only cur ...

Facing the Facts: Assessing the Vulnerability of Africa's Water Resources to Environmental Change
UNEP, 2005Africa's high dependence on natural resources makes its people vulnerable to environmental change. Acknowledging this, UNEP and START initiated a study in Feb. 2003 - (Vulnerability of Water Resources to Environmental Change in Afica). In the publication 4 regional groups of researchers address the vulnerability issue in Southern, Eastern, Western and Northern Africa by means of selected river/lake/groundwater,basins according to natural (physuigraphic) anthropogenic (socio-economic) and management criteria. The basin was selected as a key unit for assessment because it balances resource prote ...

Climate change, rivers and rainfall : recent research on climate change science from the Hadley Centre
The Met.Office, 2005The global average temperature for 2004 was around 0.75 °C above that at the end of the 19th century, making it the fourth warmest year on record. There is now strong evidence that extremes of rainfall over land have changed during recent decades. However, some areas do experience changes opposite to the global average trends. There is evidence that human Activity is changing river flows, both directly through global warming and through the effect of increasing carbon dioxide on plant behaviour.
Predictions from Hadley Centre climate models show that further increases in temperature an ...

Drought case study for Malawi
Munthali G.; Department of Meteorological Services, Malawi - Chancellor College, University of Malawi, 2003Extreme climate events such as droughts are very common in Malawi and yet their impacts are generally not well factored into the long term National Development Plan. Good examples of the potential hazards of extreme climatic events have been demonstrated by the impacts of the 1948/49 and 1991/92 droughts.
The overall objective of this study is therefore to assess historical droughts that had detrimental effects on the economy. Specifically it aims at developing thematic mapping of areas affected by droughts so as to identify vulnerable zones and to identify profiles of notable d ...

The rehabilitation of the delta of the Senegal River in Mauritania : fielding the ecosystem approach
Hamerlynck Olivier; Duvail Stéphanie; International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN - IUCN, 2003The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) advocates an ecosystem approach to environmental management, and spells out the principles in its Appendix 1. However, applying these principles can sometimes be less than straightforward. This book tells the story of an ecosystem approach to the rehabilitation of the lower delta of the Senegal River in Mauritania, in and around Diawling National Park. Its main objective is to provide practitioners with a “feel” for what the approach can entail in the real-life setting of a remote corner of the Sahel, where people’s livelihoods are inextricably tied ...
