The Hydrographic Programme of the international World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a comprehensive global hydrographic survey of physical and chemical properties, of unprecedented scope and quality, and represents the "state of the oceans" during the 1990s.
The "Printed Atlas" is a copy of the published volume and contains full introductory text. The "Digital Atlas" presents the same graphical material, with additional properties and levels, ancillary data sets, and bibliographic material for each of the vertical sections.

Bioenergy and water are inextricably linked. For the first time, this report examines in depth these interlinkages, highlights the risks and opportunities, and offers an outlook on ways to address them. It provides policymakers with scientific information to support informed strategies and policies. The report also points to the need for further research, filling data gaps, and the development of regionalized tools. Water quantity and quality are factors that determine the extent to which bioenergy can contribute to the overall energy mix. For example, in a world already facing water stress, largely due to over 70% of freshwater being consumed by the agricultural sector, bioenergy development is likely to add to this through feedstock production and conversion processes - and hence increase the pressure. At the same time, there are opportunities to harness bioenergy development to help increase access to water by leveraging the introduction of ef- ficient water management techniques, by increasing soil absorption capacity in dry areas, by selecting appropriate crops, by providing energy for water pumping and cleaning water.

Approaches based on extreme value theory as well as ad hoc methods are considered. We then present in Chapter 3 some worked examples using two time series of significant wave height measurements, one in deep and the other in shallow waters. In Chapter 4 we provide an inventory of software packages available to carry out extreme value analyses. We finish in Chapter 5 with some guidelines / recommendations.

PEMSEA, 2011T he East Asian Seas are a major economic resource for the world’s demand for fishery and aquaculture products, and a natural heritage and biodiversity asset for the people of the region. The East Asian Seas harbour a significant share of the world’s coral reefs and mangroves; it also produces about 40 percent of the world’s fishcatch and more than 80 percent of aquaculture. But, with over 2 billion people living in the region, the human pressure on marine and coastal resources is very high, intensified by the impacts of climate change and severe weather events.

The status and distribution of freshwater biodiversity in central Africa
One of the main reasons cited for inadequate representation of biodiversity in the development processes is a lack of readily available information on inland water taxa. In response to this need for basic for information on species, the IUCN Species Programme conducted a regional assessment of the status and distribution of 2,261 taxa of freshwater fishes, molluscs, odonates, crabs and selected families of aquatic plants from throughout central Africa. This study is based on the collation and analysis of existing information, and the knowledge of regional experts.

ASMET: Satellite Precipitation Products for Hydrological Management in Southern Africa
This module introduces a variety of meteorological and hydrological products that can improve the quality of heavy rainfall forecasts and assist with hydrological management during extensive precipitation events in Southern Africa. Among the products are the satellite-based ASCAT, SMOS, and ASAR GM soil moisture products and the hydro-estimator. The products are presented within the context of a case, the flooding of South Africa's Vaal Dam region in 2009/2010.
