Mitigating Climate Change through Restoration and Management of Coastal Wetlands and Near-shore Marine Ecosystems : Challenges and Opportunities
The technical report, prepared by Stephen Crooks, Dorothee Herr, Jerker Tamelander, Dan Laffoley and Justin Vandever, consolidates information from the literature and provides analysis on the climate change mitigation potential of seagrasses and coastal wetlands, including coastal peats, tidal freshwater wetlands, salt marshes and mangroves (see Annex 2). The numbers in this full technical report have been adjusted since the synthesis note, produced while the study was in progress, was released in Cancun. The calculations of emissions are ballpark, but reasonable, and represent an order of mag ...

The numbers in this full technical report have been adjusted since the synthesis note, produced while the study was in progress, was released in Cancun. The calculations of emissions are ballpark, but reasonable, and represent an order of magnitude range. They are meant to stimulate additional and focused research, while raising awareness among the science, management and policy communities of the dangers of ignoring these unaccounted for GHG sources and sinks.

Beyond carbon: rights-based safeguard principles in law
The aim of climate change mitigation and adaptation programs are to protect all the Earth’s inhabitants from the serious threats posed by climate change. Safeguards ensure both mitigation and adaptation activities truly address these purposes.
The rights-based safeguards described in this report are social safeguards designed by the Civil Society Network for Climate Justice to become a framework for climate change mitigation and adaptation in general, and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD) in particular. The rights-based safeguards described in this report are social safeguards designed by the Civil Society Network for Climate Justice to become a framework for climate change mitigation and adaptation in general, and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD) in particular. They take the form of considerations for accepting, operationalising, and monitoring and evaluating REDD. These safeguards are designed notonly as tools for inclusion in on-going REDD programs, but also asprinciples to be used from the outset, when REDD is still underconsideration.Language(s): English

Climate change mitigation strategies in fast-growing countries: the benefits of early action
Focusing on the climate problem, it is now clear that developing countries, especially fast-growing regions such as those in the so-called BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China), will have a major impact on future emission dynamics and will play a major role in climate negotiations.

Coping with a changing climate: considerations for adaptation and mitigation in agriculture
This book presents historical evidence of the linkages between climate and food security and the current challenges climate change poses on world food security. It argues that changing climatic conditions are projected to affect food security from the local to the global level as the unpredictability of weather conditions increases. It calls for new policy driven options to address the emerging challenges of attaining improved food security.

AGM, 02. Early Warning Systems for Drought Preparedness and Drought Management
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; Sivakumar Mannava V.K.; Wood Deborah A. - WMO, 2000 (WMO/TD-No. 1037)Effective drought early warning systems are an integral part of efforts worldwide to improve drought preparedness. Timely and reliable data and information must be the cornerstone of effective drought policies and plans. In pursuit of the goal of improving the effectiveness of drought early warning systems, participants of the experts meeting were asked to address three fundamental questions:
1. What is your assessment of the current status of drought early warning systems?
2. What are the shortcomings, limitations, and needs for drought early warning systems?
3. How ca ...
