JCOMM Technical Report, 56. JCOMM Expert Team on Sea Ice (ETSI): 3rd Ice Analysts’ Workshop
Ice (ETSI), Dr. Vasily Smolyanitsky (Russian Federation), at 0900 hrs on Tuesday 18 June 2011 at the Danish Meteorological Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark. Dr. Smolyanitsky noted that the Ice Analysts’ Workshops are endorsed by both JCOMM and the International Ice Charting Working Group (IICWG) as being a valuable forum to share knowledge and coordinate ice information services throughout the world. Recognizing the increasing navigation that is taking place in the Arctic, five new METAREAs were created 3 years ago to ensure that Marine Safety Information (MSI) through the Global Global Maritime ...

JCOMM Technical Report, 59. Proceedings of the third International workshop on advances in the use of historical marine climate data
Marine surface observations—which represent a vital component of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS)—are key to understanding global climate, including its variability on time scales ranging from sub-daily to weekly to centuries. Prior to 1970, ships were almost the only source of observations. In the modern era, sensors deployed on ships, moored and drifting buoys, aircraft, and Earth Observation (EO) satellites all provide surface measurements of many different variables. The Third International Workshop on Advances in the Use of Historical Marine Climate Data (MARCDAT-III) was hosted ...

SIGRID-3 evolved from earlier SIGRID formats and incorporates much of their content (see Appendix 1 for notes on earlier SIGRID formats and their application in SIGRID-3). For example, SIGRID variable identifiers such as “CT” for total concentration are used in SIGRID-3. While all SIGRID variable identifiers may be used in SIGRID-3, those that are commonly used are required, such as concentration, stage of development, and form. Users famili ...

WWRP, 05. WWRP 2010-5 - 5th WMO Symposium on data assimilation
Improving the combination of observations and dynamical models by data assimilation systems has underpinned many advances in our understanding of the natural environment, and forecasting ability. These improvements, coupled with the development of ever more powerful computers and more sophisticated communication systems such as the internet and the World Wide Web have also heightened expectations. As a result, society is looking for further significant benefits from applications of meteorology, oceanography and hydrology.

The aim of the homogenization procedures is to detect the inhomogeneities and to correct the series. In practice there are absolute and relative methods applied for this purpose. However the application of absolute methods is very problematic and hazardous since the separation of climate change signal and the inhomogeneity signal is essentially impossible. Relative methods can be applied if there are more station series given, which can be compared mutually. The methodology of comparison is related to the following questions: reference series creation, difference series constitution, multiple ...

PWS, 18. Guidelines on Communicating Forecast Uncertainty

It allows them to make better decisions that are attuned to the reliability of the forecast. It also helps to manage the expectations of users for accurate forecasts. These Guidelines address the issue of communicating forecast uncertainty. Although they include a discussion on the sources of uncertainty, and touch on the related science (e.g. probabilistic forecasting, the use of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) ensembles), this is not their focus. Rather, the emphasis is on how National Meteorological and Hydrological Servic ...

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; Holt M.W.; Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) - WMO, 2006 (WMO/TD-No. 1333)Regional or basin-scale wave forecast model systems have been developed and run at various forecast modelling centres since the late 1970s, and as computer power grew during the 1980s, with the availability of global numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, global wave forecast models were established, often with nested regional wave models. Since that time, with increasing supercomputer capacity, the resolution of both global and regional wave models has increased, so that in 2004 a global wave model will typically have a grid spacing of ~50 km, close to or matching the resolution of the gl ...
