Satellite Feature Identification: Conveyor Belts
Conveyor belts highlight important atmospheric processes that can be advantageous for making forecasts. They can be used for identifying general temperature patterns, defining the extent of cloud cover, predicting moisture return, evaluating stability, forecasting wind gusts, pinpointing cyclogenesis, and understanding the three-dimensional structure of the atmosphere. For short-term forecasts, they can even augment NWP showing the three-dimensional structure and portraying the same information as equivalent or wet-bulb potential temperature and potential vorticity surfaces. Conveyor belts mak ...Permalink![]()

ARISE - A European research infrastructure combining three measurement techniques
Bulletin, Vol. 62(1). WMO, 2013Technology first used to listen for secret H-bomb tests could help forecasters tell us what the weather is going to be like up to a month in advance. That is one of the aims of an exciting new international research project, Atmosphere dynamics Research InfraStructure in Europe (ARISE), which kicked-off in January 2012. Following studies that showed that the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere could provide crucial information for more accurate longer-term weather forecasts, on timescales up to four weeks ahead, twelve partners from eight European member states and one associated country ha ...Permalink![]()

NOAA’s Eyes in the Sky - After five decades of weather forecasting with environmental satellites, what do future satellites promise for meteorologists and society?
While today’s environmental satellites serve many important functions, one of the most critical is to provide meteorologists with data that are crucial to making accurate, life-saving weather predictions. These “eyes in the sky” constantly orbit above us. They make atmospheric observations that are ingested into numerical weather prediction (NWP) computer models and provide meteorologists with images of weather phenomena that allow them to monitor storms around the globe, identify volcanic ash and smoke from wildfires, and track hurricane development. For all of these reasons, the US National ...Permalink![]()

Strategy Towards an Architecture for Climate Monitoring from Space
This report focuses on satellite observations for climate monitoring from space, and the need for an international architecture that ensures delivery of these observations over the time frames required for analysis of the Earth’s climate system. The report outlines a strategy for such an architecture – a strategy that is intentionally high-level, conceptual and inclusive, so that a broad consensus can be reached, and all relevant entities can identify their po¬tential contributions. The strategy, however, is not suffi¬cient, in and of itself, and therefore also presents a logical architecture ...Permalink![]()
ASMET 7: Convective Weather and Aviation in West and Central Africa
The hazards associated with convective systems present some of the most dangerous conditions encountered by aircraft and pose many challenges to aviation operations. When convection is forecast to develop, aviation forecasters are required to issue a series of warning messages and other meteorological aeronautical products to various members of the aviation community. This lesson teaches these forecasters how to produce the products, doing so in the context of a case study in which learners assume the role of aeronautical forecaster on duty at the airport in Niamey, Niger on a night when conve ...Permalink![]()
