Climatological aspects of the composition and pollution of the atmosphere
This report offers some practical guidelines on the processing and use of regular surface and upper-air observations in terms of their climatological influence on transport and diffusion of air pollutants. The concept of a meteorological potential for air pollution is discussed. An attempt was made to include examples of pertinent climatological data for various parts of the world but in fact the data are limited to temperate and northern latitudes of the northern hemisphere. There is a paucity of available meteorological studies relative to air pollution in the tropics, which, unfortunately, is where industrialization, energy consumption, and pollutant emissions are expected to increase rapidly. In addition to transport and diffusion, some attention is also devoted to climatological influences on the transformation of pollutants while they are airborne, especially the photochemical formation of oxidant. A brief summary of pertinent publications of the World Meteorological Organization is given and an effort is made not to repeat information unnecessarily therein.
Meteorological variables that are discussed include wind speed and direction, static stability, mixing heights, diffusion parameters, fog, and precipitation. A more general variable is atmospheric stagnation, which refers to meteorological conditions that are often associated with or conducive to episodes with relatively high concentrations of pollutants, especially as experienced in cities. Various definitions and applications of stagnation are described for different parts of the world. A brief description is given of considerations to be made in processing and summarizing measurements of air quality. The report includes almost 100 references.Notes: Summaries available in English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Radiation processes in the atmosphere : Second IMO Lecture
This monograph on atmospheric radiation, by one of the world's foremost specialists, gives an up-to-date review of a subject of increasing importance to meteorology. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between dynamic and radiative processes, a topic of major relevance to the numerical modelling of atmospheric circulation, especially for the purpose of long-range weather forecasting. Various chapters deal with the solar constant, radiation characteristics of the underlying surface, radiation climatology of the Earth, atmospheric aerosols and their influence on radiation transfer, t ...

State of Australian Cities 2013
The world continues to urbanise. In 2008, for the first time in history more than half of the world's population lived in cities. By 2030, it is estimated that five billion people—80 per cent of humanity—will be urbanised.
For highly urbanised countries, a wrong step in urban policy can have national implications, especially when around 40 per cent of the national population live in just two cities (as is the case for Australia). Aside from city states like Singapore and Monaco, Australia is the most urbanised nation on earth. More than three in four of Australians live in the 18 cities ...

AMAP: Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme
The Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme is one of five Working Groups of the Arctic Council.
The primary function of AMAP is to advise the governments of the eight Arctic countries (Canada, Denmark/Greenland, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States) on matters relating to threats to the Arctic region from pollution, and associated issues.
AMAP has produced a series of high quality scientifically-based assessments of the pollution status of the Arctic. The AMAP assessment reports (both the popular readable versions and detailed scienti ...

COP17 | CMP17: Working Together, Saving Tomorrow, Today
The COP serves as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, which also adopts decisions and resolutions on the implementation of its provisions.
This annual meeting is referred to as the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP).
However, Parties to the Convention that are not Parties to the Protocol are able to participate in the CMP as observers, but without the right to take decisions.

Hydrology and Water Resources Programme (HWRP)
As the world enters the 21st Century, it faces many challenges, above all that of establishing a sustainable way of life that would not threaten future generations. One of the essential elements of life on this planet is freshwater. Sustainable development therefore demands sustainable management of the world's limited resources of freshwater. Water resources cannot be managed, however, unless we know where they are, in what quantity and quality, and how variable they are likely to be in the foreseeable future.
