In recent years, concern has grown world-wide that droughts may be increasing in frequency and severity given the changing climatic conditions. Responses to droughts in most parts of the world are generally reactive in terms of crisis management and are known to be untimely, poorly coordinated and disintegrated. Consequently, the economic, social and environmental impacts of droughts have increased significantly worldwide. Because of their long-term socio-economic im ...PermalinkPermalinkECMWF, 2007-[...]The ECMWF Newsletter is published quarterly and contains articles about new developments and systems at ECMWF. The journal began as the Macedon Digest in March 1986, and then in 1995 the name was changed to the Australian Journal of Emergency Management.PermalinkTIGGE-LAM currently groups five European ensemble systems in a standard data format, and five more will be added in the near future [see table].
TIGGE-LAM is an extension of the THORPEX Interactive Grand Global Ensemble (TIGGE) archive to include weather forecasts from limited area model (LAM) ensembles. These forecasts are produced on grids between 10 and 2 km resolution and provide detailed information for the short range, up to a few days ahead. This complements the larger-scale information provided by the global data in the established TIGGE archive.PermalinkClimate changes the water rules is a comprehensive report that shows all of us working in the water sector that we will be affected by natural and human activities one way or the other. The evidence for climate change is there; chapter 1 gives an excellent overview and has used well known sources and references. The dialogues have concentrated to bring water managers closer to the climate community. The authors mentioned the confidence of climatologists to say something about the world's climate in 50 to 100 years, but what they preferred to know is the next occurrence of a severe drought or f ...PermalinkPermalinkPermalinkThe Bulletin is the Centre's main publication. Published approximately two years after earthquakes occur, it contains all relevant information for a given month's earthquakes. For each event the origin estimates given by other agencies are listed, followed by the refined estimate calculated by the Centre. This gives origin time, latitude, longitude and depth with standard errors. The earthquake's felt effects and any unusual scientific features are also described. Magnitudes are calculated from body waves and surface waves when individual stations report measurements of amplitude and period, o ...PermalinkSouth Bulletin: Reflections and Foresights takes stock of ongoing debates on major global policy challenges and delivers regular flow of analysis and commentary to policymakers in the South.PermalinkPermalinkPermalinkInstituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales (IDEAM) - Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales (IDEAM)PermalinkIntroduction to the First Edition
This glossary contains weather-related terms that may be either heard or used by severe local storm spotters or spotter groups. Its purposes are 1) to achieve some level of standardization in the definitions of the terms that are used, and 2) provide a reference from which the meanings of any terms, especially the lesser-used ones, can be found. The idea is to allow smooth and effective communication between storm spotters and forecasters, and vice versa. This is an important necessity within the severe weather warning program. Despite advances in warni ...PermalinkWhat’s new in the APFM? Not only further activities and publications, but the newsletter itself! They are categorized by type and ease of use, and grouped into the following classifications: (a) meteorology, (b) soil moisture, (c) hydrology, (d) remote sensing and (e) composite or modelled. Although listed by ‘ease of use’, it is possible that any, all or none of the indicators may be suitable for a particular application, based on user knowledge, ...PermalinkThis website of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is aimed to serve as a platform for the information sources for tropical cyclone forecasters to obtain data and tools which are useful for monitoring and forecasting of tropical cyclones. Forecasters may access the various sources providing conventional and specialized data/products including those from numerical predictions and remote sensing observations as well as forecasting tools concerning tropical cyclone development, motion, intensification and wind distribution. It will continue to develop along with the availability of new ...PermalinkPermalink
