This research program aims for three objectives by focusing on the semi-arid region of northern Ghana where the change impacts have been severely felt in forms of unpredictable floods and droughts: (1) forecast and assessment of climate and ecosystem change impact on agricultural production; (2) risk assessment of extreme weather events and introduction of adaptive water resource management methods; and ...PermalinkDevelopment of the Tropical Cyclone Forecaster Website was under the WMO TCP Sub-Project No. 24 which was established in response to a recommendation from IWTC-IV (Haikou, Hainan, China, 1998) and IWTC-V (Cairns, Australia, 2002).
The Purpose or Objective of the Web site was to provide a plaform that will serve as a source that tropical cyclone forecasters can access to obtain forecasting tools concerning tropical cyclone development, motion, intensification, wind distribution, and analysis using both conventional data sources and remote sensing sources. It will contain techniques and b ...Permalink18 April 2012: As part of its Making Cities Resilient Campaign, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has launched the Local Government Self Assessment Tool, to support cities in managing disaster risk. UNISDR reports that 2011 was the worst year on record for economic losses from disasters.
The tool aims to increase understanding of disaster risk reduction (DRR), allowing cities to establish baselines and identify planning and investment gaps for risk reduction and climate change adaptation. According to UNISDR, the new tool has been piloted in over 20 c ...PermalinkNecessity is the mother of invention. This is very much true in disaster management and development activities in Bangladesh. As a part of policy matters of government of Bangladesh disaster management efforts have been integrated into the process of national development. Flood protection embankments are
used as roads and in some cases as a portion of national road network system. Cyclone centres are used for multipurpose activities of community and rural development. Schools in coastal areas have been designed to be used as cyclone shelters in case of necessity. Houses and other ...PermalinkDesertification, along with climate change and the loss of biodiversity, were identified as the greatest challenges to sustainable development during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Established in 1994, UNCCD is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management. The Convention addresses specifically the arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas, known as the drylands, where some of the most vulnerable ecosystems and peoples can be found. In the ten-year Strategy of the UNCCD (2008-2018) that was adopted in 2007, Parties to the Conventi ...PermalinkThe main objective of the database is to serve the purposes of humanitarian action at national and international levels. Through a coordinated approach, and working with its partners, ...PermalinkWe examined the number of tropical cyclones and cyclone days as well as tropical cyclone intensity over the past 35 years, in an environment of increasing sea surface temperature. A large increase was seen in the number and proportion of hurricanes reaching categories 4 and 5. The largest increase occurred in the North Pacific, Indian, and Southwest Pacific Oceans, and the smallest percentage increase occurred in the North Atlantic Ocean. These increases have taken place while the number of cyclones and cyclone days has decreased in all basins except the North Atlantic during the past decade.PermalinkThe 11 March 2011 magnitude-9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan was one of the largest recorded earthquakes in history. It triggered a devastating tsunami that killed more than 20,000 people and an ongoing nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. Three research papers in the 17 June 2011 issue (published on 19 May) report on the mechanics of this megaquake and provide insights into the behavior of other very large, rare earthquakes.PermalinkWorld Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) - German IHP/HWRP National Committee, 2004-[...]IHP/HWRP publications Scientific papers originating in the work of the German IHP/HWRP National Committee are published in the series IHP/HWRP-Berichte under ISSN 1614-1180.PermalinkPermalinkThe Global Platform for Disaster Reduction was established in 2007 as a biennial forum for information exchange, discussion of latest development and knowledge and partnership building across sectors, with the goal to improve implementation of disaster risk reduction through better communication and coordination amongst stakeholders.
