Climate variations, drought and desertification
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; Ogallo Laban - WMO, 1985-[...], 1993 (2nd ed.; WMO-No. 653)First published to celebrate World Meteorological Day 1985 and updated and revised by Prof. L.A.J. Ogallo in 1993 to include the World Meteorological Organization's post-UNCED activities to combat desertification, and as part of WMO's contributions to the convention, this booklet explores the climatic stresses underlying drought and desertification and presents a balanced perspective of the role of climate in the uses made of the arid zone by human society.

Meteorology and Hydrology for Sustainable Development
This booklet highlights urgent issues of pollution, natural disasters and environmental emergencies. Mr Bruce presents a perspective which emphasizes that the health of the planet is dependent on equitable and sustainable development which in turn involves the search for adequate solutions ranging from sound environmental economics to a judicious use of resources, such as agriculture, water, oceans, forests and energy.

Operational hydrology report (OHR), 30. Hydrological aspects of combined effects of storm surges and heavy rainfall on river flow
This report is concerned with the flood hydrology of the lower reaches of rivers where sea level can influence flood levels. It is the outcome of two reports, one on hydrological aspects of the combined effects of storm surge and heavy rainfall on river flow, and the other on the frequency of flooding in rivers subject to sea-storm surges and rainfall-induced floods. At the instigation of the Commission for Hydrology the reports were combined and further expanded to include guidance material on flood modelling in tidal areas and material on forecasting centres.

Land use and agrosystem management under severe climatic conditions
In this Technical Note on the general principles of land use in regions with severe climates, regions have been defined according to the macro-environment they represent: arid, semi-arid, extreme monsoon, humid tropical and cold. A separate chapter is devoted to the land use and agrosystem management of each type of region.

Meteorology and public safety
Examined, for the general reader, is how the application of weather science can contribute to public safety by reducing the number of casualties in weather-related disasters. A selection of the more hazardous weather and climate phenomena are considered (tropical cyclones, floods and drought) as well as some human activities which are particularly weather sensitive (aviation and shipping).
