Sandwatch: adapting to climate change and educating for sustainable development
Cambers Gillian; Diamond Paul; United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) - UNESCO, 2010Developed through UNESCO’s Coasts and Small Islands Platform, Sandwatch began in 1998 as a regional activity involving the Caribbean UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network. It has since grown into a global programme, actively implemented in more than 50 countries worldwide with the support of UNESCO, the Sandwatch Foundation, and several other partners. This new, revised edition of the Sandwatch manual, made possible through the generous support of the Government of Denmark, builds upon more than a decade’s experience of Sandwatch practitioners across the globe – teachers, students, univers ...

It has since grown into a global programme, actively implemented in more than 50 countries worldwide with the support of UNESCO, the Sandwatch Foundation, and several other partners. This new, revised edition of the Sandwatch manual, made possible through the generous support of the Government of Denmark, builds upon more than a decade’s experience of Sandwatch practitioners across the globe – teachers, students, universities, community groups, government agencies and individuals. It integrates the issue of climate change into all chapters and activities presented in the first edition, and adds a number of new activities, including a guide to documenting and sharing Sandwatch results through the use of social networking websites and other online resources.

Why monitor the Arctic Ocean? Services to society from a sustained ocean observing system
Bates Peter; Alverson Keith; Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC); et al. - UNESCO, 2010Never has accurate information been more important, yet at
present we know very little about the Arctic Ocean. Critical physical processes are poorly understood, ecosystems remain unstudied and undiscovered, and indigenous voices go unheard. This lack of knowledge thwarts efforts to detect, predict or manage the interrelated physical, biological and social impacts of climate change, making sustainable development almost impossible. A coordinated observing system must therefore be
created for the Arctic Ocean and its coasts, to provide baseline data and ensure sustained monitor ...

Training manual on gender and climate change
IUCN, 2009The primary goal of the Global Gender and Climate Alliance is to ensure that climate change policies, decision making, and initiatives at the global, regional and national levels are gender-responsive. The GGCA has developed this training manual to increase the capacity of policy and decision makers so that efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change are gender-sensitive.

Water in a Changing World (WWDR-3) : the 3rd United Nations World Water Development Report
UNESCO, 2009
World Water Development Report (WWDR)
The triennial World Water Development Report (WWDR) is the United Nations System flagship report on water, a comprehensive review of the state of the world’s freshwater resources. The Reports provide a mechanism for monitoring changes in freshwater resources and their management and tracking progress towards achieving targets, particularly those of the Millennium Development Goals and the World Summit on Sustainable Development. Report of the World Climate Conference-3 - Better climate information for a better future : Working together towards a Global Framework for Climate Services
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC); et al. - WMO, 2009 (WMO-No. 1048)Peoples around the world are facing multi-faceted challenges of climate variability and climate change, challenges that require wise and well-informed decision-making at every level, from households and communities to countries and regions. World
Climate Conference-3 (WCC-3), held in Geneva from 31 August to 4 September 2009, considered these challenges and guided the development of an international framework for climate services that will link science-based climate prediction and information
with the management of climate-related risks and opportunities in support of adaptation ...

IOC Manuals and Guides, 50. Hazard awareness and risk mitigation in ICAM : Integrated Coastal Area Management
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; Integrated Coastal Area Management (ICAM); United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); et al. - UNESCO, 2009These guidelines aim to assist policy makers and managers in the reduction of the risks to coastal communities, their infrastructure and service-providing ecosystems from tsunamis, storm surges and other coastal hazards within the phased framework of Integrated Coastal Area Management (ICAM). As a context for the procedures presented in the Guidelines, the full framework of the ICAM process is used. This shows how the assessment of coastal hazards and the mitigation of the risks in respect of those hazards can be embedded within the four phases of ICAM, each with its respective procedural step ...

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; Levizzani Vincenzo; United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); et al. - WMO, 2008 (WMO/TD-No. 1430)This report is a synthesis of the current state of knowledge in measurements of global precipitation, a major component of the global water and energy cycle that influences significantly the Earth’s climate system, and in turn is affected by the climate system variability and change. It is a comprehensive assessment of the current global precipitation data records which have been assembled by combining observations from space-based and in situ measurements. These long-term records include observations over the land and oceans for a period of 25 years. The report describes in detail how these p ...
