World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; Penman Jim; United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); et al. - IGES, 2003The report discusses:
- Alternative definitions and provides possible framework definitions for countries to consider;
- Methodological options to inventory emissions from degradation and devegetation activities;
- Approaches to reporting and documentation; and
- Implications of methodological and definitional options for accounting under the provisions of Article 3.4 of the Kyoto Protocol (including issues of scale, costs and accuracy).

Climate change and Human Health : risks and responses
Over the ages, human societies have altered local ecosystems and modified regional climates. Today the human influence has attained a global scale. This reflects the recent rapid increase in population size, energy consumption, intensity of land use, international trade and travel, and other human activities. These global changes have heightened awareness that the long-term good health of populations depends on the continued stability of biosphere's ecological, physical and socioeconomic systems.
The world's climate system is an integral part of the complex of life-supporting pr ...

Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the Ozone Layer. 2002 Report of the Halons Technical Options Committee (HTOC) : 2002 Assessment
UNEP, 2003This Report reveals efforts of the Halons Technical Options Committee (HTOC) to identify, develop and test alternatives that can used in place of the halons. Under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete The Ozone Layer, the use of halons is being phased out in industries such as: merchant shipping, oil and gas production, and in civil aviation, as well as in the military, for explosion suppression, and in countries with economies in transition. The report reveals the progress that has been made towards the objective of reducing the need for halons, and discusses some of the problems ...

Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the Ozone Layer. 2002 Report of the Aerosols, Sterilants, Miscellaneous Uses and Carbon Tetrachloride Technical Options Committee (ATOC) : 2002 Assessment
UNEP, 2003In response to the scientific consensus that chlorofluorocarbons and halons deplete the ozone layer, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) enacted the Montreal Protocol as the principal legal document to authorize the fight to reduce the production of substances that deplete the ozone layer. This document presents an assessment report compiled by the Sterilants, Miscellaneous Uses and Carbon Tetrachloride Technical Options Committee, and reveals the progress made in efforts to phase out the consumption of chlorofluorocarbons commonly used in aerosol sprays. It also puts forward recom ...

Vital Climate Graphics Africa
GRID Arendal, 2002This set of 25 graphics focuses on the special challenges that Africa faces due to expected long term changes in climate. The graphics indicate that temperature rise in Africa corresponds to global temperature rise, and that adverse impacts including extremes, are spread across the diverse environments of Africa, putting a huge proportion of African continent at great risk.

Action on ozone
UNEP, 2000It is one of UNEP’s proudest achievements to have led the international effort to protect the Earth’s ozone layer. The Montreal Protocol, which was negotiated under our aegis, has, rightly, been regarded as a model for other international environmental agreements.

IPCC Special Report. Methodological and Technological Issues in Technology Transfer
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - IPCC, 2000Effective global response to climate change requires the development and transfer of environmentally sound technologies between and within countries, both for adapting to climate change as well as for mitigating the effects of greenhouse gas emissions. This IPCC Special Report provides a state-of-the-art overview of how to achieve and enhance this transfer. 185 eminent experts from around the world provide accurate, unbiased, policy-relevant information on technology transfer, such as capacity building, the promotion of an enabling environment, and mechanisms for technology transfer from devel ...

IPCC Special Report. Methodological and Technological Issues in Technology Transfer : summary for Policymakers
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - IPCC, 2000This Special Report has been prepared by IPCC Working Group III in response to a request by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) to the UNFCC. Innovation and enhanced efforts to transfer environmentally sound technology to limit greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to climate change will be required to meet the objective of the Climate Convention and to reduce vulnerability to climate change impacts. The report addresses the technology transfer problem in the context of climate change while emphasizing the sustainable development perspective.

IPCC Special Report. Emissions scenarios
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - IPCC, 2000The SRES scenarios cover a wide range of the main driving forces of future emissions, from demographic to technological and economic developments. As required by the Terms of
Reference, none of the scenarios in the set includes any future policies that explicitly address climate change, although all scenarios necessarily encompass various policies of other types. The set of SRES emissions scenarios is based on an extensive assessment
of the literature, six alternative modeling approaches, and an “open process” that solicited wide participation and feedback from many groups and in ...
