Coasts at risk : an assessment of coastal risks and the role of environmental solutions
Beck M.W. - Rhodes University, 2014This report examines the risks that nations face from vulnerability and exposure to coastal hazards, identifies where environmental degradation contributes to these risks and explores where environmental solutions can contribute to risk reduction. This report examines the risks that nations face from vulnerability and exposure to coastal hazards, identifies where environmental degradation contributes to these risks and explores where environmental solutions can contribute to risk reduction. Risk is defined as the interaction between a natural hazard event (including the adverse impacts of climate change) and the vulnerability of societies. This report applies an indicator-based approach to assessing the risk that coastal nations face with respect to natural hazards. It recommends a new level of cooperation between aid, development, and conservation agencies and groups is needed. It argues that there is great need and opportunity in further integration to meet risk reduction and environmental conservation management objectives.
