WMO Information System (WIS)
The WMO Information system (WIS) is the single coordinated global infrastructure responsible for the telecommunications and data management functions. It is the pillar of the WMO strategy for managing and moving weather, water and climate information in the 21st century. WIS provides an integrated approach suitable for all WMO Programmes to meet the requirements for routine collection and automated dissemination of observed data and products, as well as data discovery, access and retrieval services for all weather, climate, water and related data produced by centres and Member countries in the ...

WWW Data Management
WWW Data Management (WWW/DM) is the component within the WWW system that provides the support functions needed for the orderly and efficient overall management of meteorological data and products of the WWW system, in particular the standardised representation of data and metadata, and coordinates the monitoring of data availability and quality. The underlining principle in the WWW/DM design is the integration of the GOS, GTS, and GDPFS facilities into an efficient, well-coordinated, comprehensive system. The WWW/DM activities contribute to the development, implementation and operation of the ...

Tropical Cyclone Programme (TCP)
The Tropical Cyclone Programme is a part of WMO's Weather and Disaster Risk Reduction Services Department tasked to establish national and regionally coordinated systems to ensure that the loss of life and damage caused by tropical cyclones are reduced to a minimum.Permalink![]()
Radio Frequency Coordination (RFC)
The fifteenth World Meteorological Organization Congress (Geneva, May 2007), attended by 163 Member countries, confirmed serious concern at the continuous threat to radio frequency bands allocated for meteorological and related environmental systems expressed by the Fourteenth Congress and adopted Resolution 4 (Cg-XV) – Radio frequencies for meteorological and related environmental activities – in which WMO’s 188 Member states and territories are urged to make all efforts to do their utmost to ensure the availability and protection of suitable radio frequency bands required for meteorological ...Permalink![]()
Instruments and Methods of Observation Programme (IMOP), Commission for Instruments and Methods of Observation (CIMO)
The Instruments and Methods of Observation Programme (IMOP) sets technical standards, quality control procedures and guidance for the use of meteorological instruments and observation methods in order to promote development documentation and world-wide standardization.Permalink![]()
Global Observing System (GOS)
Global Observing System (GOS): The coordinated system of methods and facilities for making meteorological and other environmental observations on a global scale in support of all WMO Programmes; the system is comprised of operationally reliable surface-based and space-based subsystems. The GOS comprises observing facilities on land, at sea, in the air and in outer space. These facilities are owned and operated by the Member countries of WMO each of which undertakes to meet certain responsibilities in the agreed global scheme so that all countries can benefit from the consolidated efforts.Permalink![]()
Emergency Response Activities (ERA)
WMO's Emergency Response Activities (ERA) programme involves the application of specialized atmospheric dispersion-modelling techniques to track and predict the spread of airborne hazardous substances in the event of an environmental emergency. This kind of specialized application depends directly on the operational infrastructure of the numerical weather prediction systems that are implemented and maintained at many of the global, regional or national meteorological centres within WMO's World Weather Watch system.Permalink![]()
World Weather Watch (WWW) Programme
Established in 1963, the World Weather Watch -the core of the WMO Programmes- combines observing systems, telecommunication facilities, and data-processing and forecasting centres - operated by Members - to make available meteorological and related environmental information needed to provide efficient services in all countries.Permalink![]()
World Weather Research Programme (WWRP)
WWRP advances society's ability to cope with high impact weather through research focused on improving the accuracy, lead time and utilization of weather prediction. The WWRP includes working groups, experts teams and the THORPEX programme.Permalink![]()
World Climate Impact Assessment and Response Strategies Programme (WCIRP)
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) ; United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); et al. - WMOWorld Climate Impacts Assessment and Response Strategies Programme (WCIRP) is one of the WCP four sub-programs and is targeted at assessing the impacts of climate variability and changes that could markedly affect economic or social activities and thus contributing to the development of a range of socio-economic response strategies that could be used by governments and the community. UNEP is the leading agency within WCIRP and implements the programme in partnership with WMO, FAO, IPCC and UNFCCC Secretariats.Permalink![]()
World Climate Data and Monitoring Programme (WCDMP)
The World Climate Data and Monitoring Programme (WCDMP), a sub-program of the World Climate Programme (WCP), provides an international coordination of the WMO Climate System Monitoring. Priorities of WCDMP include the provision of guidance to the WMO Members in the area of climate data and climate assessment and monitoring; and the publication and dissemination of WMO authoritative reports on the status of the global climate. WCDMP offers in parallel a platform for an international collaboration for fostering high quality climate data sets and their exchange and undertaking capacity building a ...Permalink![]()
