This publication is designed to cater to the needs of persons who wish to undertake training as synoptic or aeronautical observers; it may also be used by students seeking careers as climato-logical, agrometeorological or hydrometeorological observers. Volume I deals with Earth science and should, in principle, be studied prior to the training course in meteorology. The 1984 edition of Volume II has been revised to bring it into line with new terminology and the codes for surface observations introduced in 1982. It is divided into four parts: general meteorology, surface instruments, methods of observation, and aeronautical meteorology. The sections dealing with the new codes are also useful for Class III personnel. (See also WMO-No 622.)
